I used to think a cluttered counter was just a “clean more often” problem. It’s not. The real issue is that certain items don’t have a real home, so they just live wherever there’s space. Once I gave each of those things a spot off the counter, the clutter stopped coming back. Here are the three things that made the biggest difference.

1. A paper towel holder that mounts under the cabinet
I didn’t realize how much room a standing paper towel roll ate up until I moved it. It’s one of those things that’s always slightly in the way — you push it aside to cut vegetables, it tips over, it ends up sitting in whatever mess you’re currently cleaning.
I switched to the DEKAVA under-cabinet paper towel holder, which mounts right under your upper cabinets so the roll hangs down instead of sitting on the counter. It’s stainless steel, so it’s not going to rust from being near the sink, and it comes with adhesive tape for a no-drill install (you do need to let it cure for 24 hours before loading a roll, so don’t do this the morning of a dinner party). If you’d rather not rely on adhesive, it also comes with screws. It fits any roll up to about 11.8 inches, which covers pretty much every paper towel brand I’ve used.
Small change, but it’s one less thing rolling around on the counter.
2. An outlet cover that doubles as a shelf
This one surprised me. I never thought about the outlet itself as wasted space, but if you’ve got a charger or an electric toothbrush plugged in, it’s usually just sitting loose next to the plug, cord dangling everywhere.
The WALI outlet shelf replaces your existing outlet cover with a small shelf — about 4.3 by 5.1 inches — that sits right over a standard duplex or decorator outlet. It holds up to 10 lbs, has a couple of built-in slots that work well for a toothbrush or two, and has some cord management built in so cables aren’t just hanging loose. Installation is basically swapping out your existing cover plate, and it comes with the mounting hardware you need.
It’s a strange one to recommend, but if you’ve got a cluttered corner near an outlet, it’s an easy fix for something you’d otherwise never think to solve.
3. A wall-mounted caddy for sponges and soap by the sink
The sink is where clutter goes to multiply — sponges, brushes, soap, all of it just sitting in a puddle or migrating around the counter depending on the day. A dedicated caddy fixed this faster than anything else on this list.
I like the Cisily sponge holder and sink organizer for this — it’s stainless steel, compact enough to tuck right next to the faucet (about 9.25 x 4 x 6.4 inches), and it’s split into three separate compartments, so your sponge, detergent bottle, and sink stopper aren’t just piled on top of each other. There’s also a brush holder built in that fits up to four brushes. The nice detail is the spout: it rotates in three directions so you can point runoff straight into the sink instead of letting it pool on the counter, which means you’re not constantly pulling out a drip tray to dump it. It just sits on the counter, no installation needed.
Out of the three, this is the one that made the sink area actually look intentional instead of like a mess I was constantly managing.
The takeaway
None of these took more than a few minutes to install, and none of them required drilling if you’d rather avoid it. The common thread is just giving cluttered items an actual place to live — off the counter, out of the way, but still within reach. Start with whichever spot bothers you most; for me it was the sink, but your mileage may vary.
